Twelve years ago I first met Heather. She was the first birth worker to tell me about zinc, magnesium, and the protein requirements of breastfeeding - and it changed my life! The journey towards healing that came after wouldn't have started if she wasn't there at the start. Like she says, the hard cases get sent to her - and I was a hard to crack one! I'm eternally grateful she was there to set me on my path to healing.

My midwife told me that until she was with me she had lost faith in nature medication free labour.

Just wanted to let you know our little Liam is born. He weighed in at 10lb 6 oz and took 2.5 hrs to birth. He's feeding like a trooper and is doing really well. Thanks for everything Heather another great labour and a second beautiful baby. I am writing this on my phone in hospital so I hope you get it no email access.

âWhen nothing else is working, you haven't seen Heatherâ
To say that the birth of my first baby was traumatic does not begin to describe what my husband and I went through in the hospital system.
After medical incompetence that led to an emergency c-section I was heartbroken and shattered, emotionally and physically, but at the time could only focus on the relief I felt holding my healthy little boy in my arms.
It was in the weeks and months that followed that my body finally allowed itself to begin feeling the shock, pain, and grief that I went through.
I experienced intense, crippling pain around my scar site and womb for over a year and a strong inflammatory heat radiating through my vagina and abdomen.
I was prone to sleeplessness due to constant discomfort, and was absolutely certain I would never have another baby and put myself through that trauma again (despite my husband and I initially wanting another). The thought of being intimate with it leading to conception was terrifying.
I saw physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and masseuses to try and ease some of my physical symptoms. I spent thousands of dollars. Nothing worked.
There was zero relief of any symptom, and I had a heavy, hopeless feeling in my chest knowing that this was my new normal, that I would have to get used to feeling this pain. It was at this point, where I had essentially given up on healing, that I had the opportunity to meet Heather Bruce.
Immediately upon meeting Heather I felt safe and at ease. After a mere handful of gentle questions I felt wracking sobs come upon me and I was taken into a warm embrace that led the flow for the remainder of our session.
Through her several decades of experience I trusted to fully release myself into the care of Heather, and it has been the most miraculous and life changing thing I could have possibly done for myself. Through her gentling way, my body responded.
I relaxed, opened up, and trauma that I had been holding not just from childbirth but for years was released through her gentle hands. Her soft tones walked me through each step of the way, and I felt as nurtured as if Heather was my own mother.
I could feel the heat leaving my body and the pain fading away. To this day, months later, I am pain free after a single session. My husband and I are intimate again. We are considering our second baby and I look towards this without fear.
"What would Heather say?" is our new favourite phrase in our house and I feel incredibly blessed to have been fortunate enough to cross paths with this incredible woman.
I cannot recommend her enough, and if you hold any doubt in seeing Heather I can guarantee they will immediately fade the moment you meet her.

Heatherâs manual gives the couple a sense of empowerment.
There is always a reason behind things happening and whilst my hospital training may say otherwise, whenever I have a couple use her work, often apparently âhigh riskâ problems always reduce, leaving the birth a more likely natural event.
The pelvic opening massage and the use of smokey moxa has revolutionized the way labour plays out for those especially previously plagued with structural pain and inability to sleep comfortably.

I was given WDCD by a couple, who had just had such a wonderful pregnancy and birth, so very different from the last two, that they wanted to share it with all as they had finished having their own children.

An amazing resource - something for the dads to do to get them involved
Needs to be practicing at home before labour, as although it is easy and the dads âget itâ, mum needs to trust him and his abilities and this comes through home work in the weeks leading into labor.
The most important part of this work is that it is positive. Dad, instead of not knowing what to do, has a guide, and can be incredibly useful.
When dad has been practicing at home, when in labour he is such a valuable asset as he takes the place of an epidural â they have danced this act before - she trusts him, he knows what to do and it all just flows. Beautiful!!!

What Dads Can Doâ is such a wealth of things to do in all stages of pregnancy and afterwards â not just a labour help. Invaluable when I had had baby and did not know what to do â there was always something I could do

My husband found the book very good, especially after baby was born.
In the first few weeks after her birth he really focused his attention on making a beautiful environment for us as a family, and my time to bond with her and to rest my body.
He also found the book really useful when I suffered a bout of mastitis in her third week. It helped both of us understand the importance of rest, rest and more rest!
Thanks for a great resource. The index in the back is particularly useful, as are the page references throughout.

I had âWhat Dadâs Can Doâ by the bed, and whenever I needed some information, validation or reassurance, I had a look.
If I was awake worrying at 2am â WDCD always came up with why things were happening, and what I had done to contribute, and what to do to undo whatever it was.
All other pregnancy books said, âdonât worryâ or âsee your doctorâ. This book gave us instant explanations and the answers - and they all worked!â

We were well into the moxa and massage a couple of times a week. My husband would put the same CD on each time, and oil me up for what could have passed for torture. (Funnily enough, it is this same CD that now brings baby back down to earth if he is uptight or upset in the car).
The use of moxa, and its effects on me must have been greater than we thought at the time for him to have this reaction to the music.) My backside was a series of bruises, but at the same time, as the weeks passed, the pain lessened and each massage was teaching me more about my body, pain thresholds and how to manage.
We used âWhat Dadâs Can Doâ as our point of reference for everything, particularly as by this stage, I was fairly preoccupied with the concept of labour â what would it be like? How was it possible and is it ever going to happen?
The advice that Heather has given us has been logical and without risk. It all came down to changing our point of reference. Health and naturally doing it for ourselves.

I wish every woman could have a copy of this book. I have used it so many times now I donât leave home without it, just in case I should come across a pregnant woman. It has helped me understand how to keep my body in balance emotionally and physically, and it validates my own intuitions time and time again. All those conditions people will tell you are âcommonâ â I have known in my heart are actually symptoms of my body asking for help, asking me to change in some way, heal in some way.
Finally, now with âWhat Dads Can Doâ I have found a manual to show me HOW to change; HOW to heal; that my instincts are valid and my baby deserves the attention it is requesting through my body.
My partner and I have successfully referred to this book and itâs detailed, step by step instructions for myself, and friends many times â prenatal massage, constipation, digestive upsets, nausea and post-birth internal scarring.
I experienced a threatened miscarriage at 17 weeks, and with guidance (I rang her) from Heather through this book â we put into action with simple techniques, and with a faith in my bodyâs ability to heal itself, all was well. This book is detailed, accurate and practical and I cannot recommend it highly enough to parents, midwives, doctors and anyone in contact with pregnant womenâ.
